China Stocks Tumble as Robot Rally Defies Broad Selloff; Gold, Copper Slide

China's A-shares closed sharply lower, with ChiNext down 2.68% and over 4,300 stocks falling. Humanoid robotics and Fujian-based stocks bucked the trend, while PCB, optical modules, and metals slumped. Bond futures rose as investors sought safety amid rising U.S. yields and a strong dollar.

Market Snapshot: A-Shares Retreat, Growth and Cyclicals Lead Losses

China’s major equity benchmarks closed sharply lower on Wednesday, with the tech-heavy ChiNext Index dropping 2.68% and the Shenzhen Component falling 2.34%. The Shanghai Composite lost 1.22%, slipping below the 3,900 level in late trading. Turnover on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges totaled 1.65 trillion yuan, down 111.6 billion yuan from the previous session. More than 4,300 stocks declined across the three exchanges. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 0.29%, while the Hang Seng Tech Index slipped 0.41%.

Sector Divergence: Robots Surge, PCB and Metals Sink

Despite the broad decline, humanoid robotics was the standout performer, with the highest number of daily limit-up stocks. The rally was fueled by Tesla’s accelerated Optimus production timeline and Elon Musk’s prediction of up to 1 billion humanoid robots within 20 years. Core component makers—reducers, screws, precision bearings, and dexterous hands—saw massive buying. Luoyang Bearing hit the 20% daily limit, alongside a dozen other stocks. Industrial robot installations in China reached 354,000 units in 2025, accounting for 59% of global installations.

Fujian-based stocks also surged in the afternoon, driven by a provincial government plan to build a “Beautiful China Pioneer Zone” by 2030 and rising expectations for cross-strait economic integration. Straits Innovation and Pingtan Development both hit their 20% limits.

On the downside, PCB and copper-clad laminate supply chains led losses. Optical modules, fiber optics, and high-speed copper connections also fell sharply, with Zhongji Innolight, New Easy, and CATL weighing on the ChiNext. Precious and base metals declined, with gold and silver futures under pressure. Domestic commodity futures were broadly lower: lithium carbonate fell 4.79%, platinum dropped 3.57%, and alumina lost 1.14%, while crude oil rose 6.96%.

Bond and Currency Markets: Safe-Haven Bid

Government bond futures rose across the curve, with the 30-year contract up 0.31%. The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasuries remained above 5%, pressuring high-valuation growth assets and non-yielding gold. The strong dollar and elevated rates increased the opportunity cost of holding precious metals, triggering profit-taking after a strong rally.

Investor Takeaways

  • Rotation into policy-driven themes: The divergence between robotics and Fujian stocks versus the broad market highlights a market hungry for policy catalysts and earnings visibility. Humanoid robotics is transitioning from concept to commercialization, with 2026 seen as a potential mass-production year.
  • Watch rates and the dollar: Elevated U.S. yields and a firm dollar are headwinds for growth equities and commodities. A sustained break above 5% on the 10-year Treasury could keep pressure on valuations.
  • Selectivity is key: With turnover shrinking and breadth negative, investors should focus on sectors with clear policy support and supply-chain verification, such as robotics components and regional development plays, while avoiding crowded trades in metals and PCB.
