Saudi Airport Strikes Push Oil Higher, Then Retreat; Nvidia in Talks to Buy Reflection AI

Saudi airport strikes lifted Brent to $105.48 before a U.S. license for Russian diesel pulled prices back to about $103.50. Nvidia is in early talks to acquire or invest further in open-weight model startup Reflection AI, while CPI, JPMorgan, ASML and TSMC headline a heavy macro and earnings week.

Oil Spikes and Fades as Middle East Risk Meets Russian Diesel Relief

Riyadh’s international airport was struck twice over the weekend, killing 13 people and injuring more than 300 in Saturday’s attack, with a second strike on the terminal on Sunday leaving one dead and 11 wounded. Dammam airport also reported attacks, and the Houthis claimed responsibility for Saturday’s assault. President Trump said the United States is weighing participation in strikes against the group.

Brent crude climbed to $105.48 a barrel and WTI touched $92.44 in early Asian trading before reversing course. Brent settled back near $103.50 and WTI near $90.73 after the U.S. Treasury issued a general license on October 9 permitting transactions related to the sale, delivery and import of Russian-origin diesel through April 7, 2027. The authorization recalibrates supply expectations, though how quickly and how much actual volume reaches the market remains a delivery question.

Trump also said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. Kyiv voiced support for reciprocal restraint but said it is still awaiting U.S. details and reported continued strikes on its facilities. Moscow has not confirmed the arrangement, leaving the “energy ceasefire” unverified — a key reason the geopolitical risk premium has not fully unwound.

Nvidia Circles Reflection AI as Model Layer Consolidates

Nvidia is in early talks with open-weight model developer Reflection AI over an acquisition or additional investment, with no deal finalized. Reflection AI released its first open-weight model, Beam, last week, targeting coding and agentic tasks. Nvidia is already an investor. A deal would extend the chipmaker’s footprint into the model layer, tightening the loop between silicon, inference workloads and agentic software — and raising competitive questions for cloud providers and model labs that buy Nvidia hardware while competing with its portfolio.

Friday’s Tape: Broad Gains, Megacap Divergence

The S&P 500 rose 0.59% to 7,811.54, the Dow added 0.83% to 51,654.95 and the Nasdaq gained 0.64% to 27,366.17. The S&P 500 finished the week up 1.15%. Real estate led at +1.88%, followed by consumer discretionary at +1.69% and health care at +1.58%, while communication services and energy slipped. Among the Magnificent Seven, Amazon jumped 3.29%, Microsoft 2.38% and Tesla 2.05%, while Meta, Nvidia and Apple declined.

What to Watch This Week

  • Tuesday: JPMorgan kicks off big-bank earnings. Net interest margin, investment banking revenue and credit loss provisions — especially corporate and consumer repayment capacity at elevated rates — are the focus. Banks were among the few S&P 500 decliners on Friday.
  • Wednesday: September CPI and ASML’s third-quarter report. Energy’s weight in the inflation print is amplified after the weekend’s oil volatility; a hot core reading could revive October rate-hike bets. ASML’s orders and guidance feed directly into the semiconductor complex.
  • Thursday: TSMC’s quarterly call. Advanced-node utilization, AI chip orders and 2027 capex plans make it the most direct thermometer for AI hardware demand.

For crypto markets, the setup is familiar but sharper: an oil-driven inflation scare would pressure rate-cut expectations and risk assets broadly, while TSMC and ASML guidance serves as the read-through for AI-linked tokens and decentralized compute narratives. The unconfirmed energy ceasefire is the swing factor — confirmation would drain the geopolitical premium; renewed escalation would put $105 Brent back in play and complicate the inflation path into year-end.
