Core Scientific Q3: Hosting Revenue Surges 187% as Self-Mining Collapses 79%

Core Scientific's Q3 revenue jumped 187% to $233 million, but the growth was entirely driven by hosting, which now makes up 92.5% of revenue. Self-mining revenue collapsed 79% as the company sold off mined bitcoin, signaling a strategic pivot to infrastructure services.

Core Scientific’s Q3: A Tale of Two Business Models

Bitcoin miner Core Scientific reported third-quarter revenue of approximately $233 million, a 187% year-over-year increase, driven almost entirely by its hosting business. Hosting revenue reached $215.4 million, up nearly 60% quarter-over-quarter and accounting for about 92.5% of total revenue. Meanwhile, self-mining revenue plummeted 79% year-over-year to just $12.26 million, highlighting a dramatic shift in the company’s revenue mix.

Net income came in at approximately $1.178 billion, but this figure was largely inflated by a non-cash gain from changes in the fair value of warrants. Adjusted EBITDA rose to $133.6 million, with margins expanding from 25% to 57% quarter-over-quarter, reflecting improved operational efficiency in the hosting segment.

The Hosting Pivot Accelerates

Core Scientific’s transformation from a self-mining-focused operation to a hosting-centric provider is now unmistakable. The company sold digital assets mined from its self-mining operations for approximately $287 million in cash during the first three quarters of the year, reducing its digital asset holdings to about $2.69 million. This liquidation strategy has bolstered liquidity but also signals a reduced balance-sheet exposure to bitcoin price volatility.

The hosting model, which provides revenue from clients who pay for power and infrastructure, offers more predictable cash flows compared to the volatile economics of self-mining. With bitcoin’s halving in April 2024 compressing block rewards, many miners have seen profitability squeezed. Core Scientific’s pivot allows it to benefit from the growing demand for high-density computing infrastructure, particularly from AI and high-performance computing (HPC) clients.

Industry Implications: Miners Become Infrastructure Providers

Core Scientific’s results reflect a broader trend in the bitcoin mining industry: the shift from pure-play mining to infrastructure hosting. As mining margins tighten, companies with access to cheap power and scalable facilities are finding lucrative opportunities in hosting third-party miners and, increasingly, AI compute clients. This diversification reduces reliance on bitcoin’s price and network difficulty while capitalizing on the AI boom’s insatiable demand for data center capacity.

However, the heavy reliance on hosting revenue also introduces concentration risk. If hosting clients—particularly large AI or crypto miners—scale back, Core Scientific’s revenue could be vulnerable. The company’s ability to maintain high margins will depend on its pricing power and operational efficiency in a competitive hosting market.

Forward-Looking: Balancing Growth and Risk

Looking ahead, Core Scientific is likely to continue expanding its hosting capacity, potentially converting more of its mining fleet to hosting arrangements. The company’s strong adjusted EBITDA and improved margins provide a cushion for further investment. However, investors should watch for the sustainability of the warrant-driven net income and the potential dilution from equity-linked instruments. Additionally, the company’s reduced digital asset holdings mean it has less upside exposure to bitcoin price rallies, a trade-off that may appeal to risk-averse investors but could disappoint those seeking leveraged bitcoin exposure.

As the mining industry matures, Core Scientific’s evolution underscores a critical reality: survival in a post-halving environment requires diversification and a focus on high-margin infrastructure services. The company’s Q3 results suggest it is executing this pivot effectively, but the long-term test will be whether it can sustain growth without relying on non-cash gains or a single dominant revenue stream.
