Can Zcash Overtake Bitcoin? The Privacy Premium Debate Heats Up After a 25x Rally

Zcash has rallied roughly 25x in a year, pushing its market cap to about 1.49% of Bitcoin's. While Zcash technically solves the privacy problem Satoshi once flagged, Bitcoin's liquidity, security, and institutional acceptance mean ZEC is unlikely to overtake BTC — though it could still reprice higher.

Zcash’s Meteoric Rise Revives an Old Question

Over the past year, Zcash (ZEC) has surged roughly 25-fold, catapulting the privacy-focused cryptocurrency back into the spotlight and reigniting a long-dormant debate: could ZEC eventually overtake Bitcoin — and should it?

The argument has a certain logic. Zcash is, at its core, Bitcoin plus a privacy layer. While Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin SV, and eCash are also Bitcoin forks, none has come close to Bitcoin’s roughly $1.7 trillion market capitalization. What Zcash has that they lack is privacy built directly into the protocol. Satoshi Nakamoto himself acknowledged in 2010 that “if a solution was found” for privacy, Bitcoin could offer a “better, simpler, more convenient version.” The obstacle was double-spending: every node must see every transaction to prevent coins being spent twice. Satoshi admitted he could not see how zero-knowledge proofs might solve this. Zcash is that solution.

The Technical Case Versus the Market Reality

From a purely technical standpoint, Zcash arguably deserves a higher valuation. But Bitcoin’s premium rests on first-mover advantage, the deepest liquidity in crypto, the most secure network, acceptance by banks and governments, and its status as digital gold. Zcash holds almost none of these.

Yet the gap is narrowing. ZEC’s market cap of about $25.3 billion now equals roughly 1.49% of Bitcoin’s. At the start of 2025, that ratio was just 0.05%. For context, Ethereum represents 19.4% of Bitcoin’s market cap, BNB 6.1%, and XRP 5.7%. If privacy becomes viewed as essential rather than a luxury, ZEC could plausibly reprice toward the levels of BNB or XRP — implying a further 4x from current levels.

Usage, Risks, and the Road Ahead

Privacy is not merely theoretical here. Shielded ZEC peaked at 5.2 million coins in May, indicating real usage rather than passive holding. Each coin moved into a shielded pool makes everyone else’s transactions harder to trace, so privacy strengthens with adoption. Combined with Bitcoin’s identical 21 million supply cap and halving schedule, Zcash looks increasingly like the upgraded Bitcoin Satoshi once described.

Still, risks abound:

  • Only about 29% of ZEC is actually shielded, leaving most circulation transparent.
  • Around 81% of supply is issued versus 95% for Bitcoin, with inflation still near 4% annually.
  • Twenty percent of block rewards flow to a development fund rather than miners.
  • A four-year forgery vulnerability disclosed in late May briefly sent ZEC down more than 50% before being patched.
  • Competing privacy solutions — Shielded Bitcoin, Ethereum’s RAILGUN and Zama — could reduce demand for standalone privacy coins.

Zcash enjoys a massive first-mover advantage after roughly a decade in production. But until its shielded usage, tokenomics, and competitive moat improve, the case for flipping Bitcoin remains more provocative than persuasive.
