Three Traders Cross $10B in Volume as Loss-Mining Frenzy Hits Papertrade
TREE NEWS reports: On-chain perpetuals platform Papertrade launched its loss-mining program on October 10, and in under six days the top three volume farmers have each crossed the $10 billion mark. The leader has traded $11.6 billion while losing $780,000, mining 46 million PAPER at a cost of $0.017 per token. The second-ranked wallet traded $10.3 billion, lost $930,000, and mined 85 million PAPER at $0.011 each. The third-ranked wallet traded $10.1 billion, lost $980,000, and mined 252 million PAPER at just $0.0039 per token.
The Economics of Loss Mining
The numbers tell a story of extreme subsidization. The third farmer’s effective cost of $0.0039 per PAPER is roughly 20% of the first farmer’s cost, despite similar trading losses. That gap implies the third wallet is capturing a disproportionate share of emissions, likely through a combination of higher-tier reward multipliers, earlier participation, or more efficient wash-trading patterns. In loss-mining schemes, the protocol pays users in tokens for generating volume, even when those trades lose money. The bet is that the token’s eventual market value exceeds the combined trading losses and gas costs.
Why This Matters for DeFi
Papertrade’s model is a high-wire act. It generates headline-grabbing volume — over $30 billion in less than a week — but that volume is artificial, driven by mercenary capital chasing emissions rather than genuine trading demand. When the program ends or emissions taper, volume could collapse overnight. The same dynamic has played out across DeFi: Blast, EigenLayer, and countless points programs attracted billions in TVL only to see sharp outflows after airdrops. The key question is whether Papertrade can convert these mercenary users into organic traders before the subsidy well runs dry.
Risks and Forward Outlook
The biggest risk is token price. If PAPER lists below $0.0039, the third farmer is underwater on a $980,000 loss. If it lists below $0.017, the first farmer is in the red. With three wallets alone accounting for roughly 383 million PAPER, the token’s float and distribution will be heavily concentrated among a handful of farmers. A rushed or poorly structured token generation event could trigger immediate sell pressure. On the other hand, if Papertrade secures a major listing and the token trades above $0.02, these farmers could see returns in the millions. For now, the market is watching to see whether loss mining is a sustainable growth engine or just the latest iteration of DeFi’s subsidy arms race.
