Blackstone’s Jon Gray Rejects AI Bubble Talk, Cites ‘Parabolic’ Demand

Blackstone President Jon Gray dismissed AI bubble concerns, arguing that demand for AI infrastructure is outpacing supply in a way that differs from past speculative cycles. He cited the firm's joint AI venture with Anthropic as evidence of near-parabolic client demand.

Blackstone President Pushes Back on AI Bubble Narrative

Blackstone President Jon Gray on Thursday rejected claims that artificial intelligence is forming a speculative bubble, arguing that demand for AI infrastructure is outpacing supply in ways that differ fundamentally from past boom-and-bust cycles. His comments came days after billionaire investor Ken Griffin questioned whether AI valuations had run ahead of reality.

“When you think about a bubble, you think about building capacity and then hoping demand shows up,” Gray said. “In AI, you’re building capacity and hoping you can keep up with demand.”

A Different Kind of Buildout

Gray contrasted the current AI investment wave with the telecom bubble of the late 1990s, when fiber-optic networks were laid at enormous cost before meaningful demand materialized. In AI, he said, the dynamic is inverted: customers are already lining up for compute, models and deployment services, and providers are struggling to scale fast enough.

He pointed to Ode, an AI advisory firm Blackstone launched with Anthropic, as evidence of the supply-demand imbalance. “We simply can’t keep up with client demand,” Gray said. “Demand growth is nearly parabolic.”

The remarks underscore a broader debate on Wall Street and in crypto markets about whether the AI trade—now a dominant driver of equity valuations and a growing narrative in digital assets—is sustainable or overheated.

Crypto and AI: A Converging Narrative

The AI boom has spilled into crypto through decentralized compute networks, GPU marketplaces and AI-agent tokens, which have attracted billions in speculative capital. For crypto investors, Gray’s comments offer a useful framework: projects with genuine, measurable demand for compute and inference services may be better positioned than those riding pure narrative momentum.

  • Infrastructure demand: AI compute scarcity supports decentralized GPU networks and on-chain inference markets.
  • Valuation discipline: Even bullish operators acknowledge that parabolic demand does not guarantee parabolic returns for every token.
  • Institutional validation: Blackstone’s partnership with Anthropic signals that traditional finance sees AI services as a durable revenue stream, not a passing fad.

Forward Outlook

Gray’s pushback won’t settle the bubble debate. But his distinction—capacity chasing demand versus demand chasing capacity—is a useful lens for investors navigating both AI equities and crypto’s AI-adjacent tokens. If demand truly is parabolic, the winners will be those who can deliver real infrastructure and services, not just exposure to the theme.
