Nasdaq Plunges 2.6% as AI Spending Fears Trigger Tech Selloff; Bond Yields Fall

US tech stocks tumbled Thursday, with the Nasdaq down 2.6% amid growing doubts over the sustainability of AI spending. Meta fell 7%, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 6.7%, and investors fled to bonds, pushing Treasury yields lower.

AI Capex Concerns Spark Broad Tech Selloff

US technology stocks suffered a sharp selloff on Thursday as investors grew increasingly worried that the massive spending on artificial intelligence may not be sustainable. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.6%, marking its biggest single-day decline since June, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.02%, reflecting a rotation away from growth names.

The selloff was led by major AI-linked companies. Meta dropped 7% after disclosing substantial additional spending commitments, with profits missing Wall Street expectations despite strong revenue growth. Nvidia, SpaceX, and CoreWeave also declined, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index plunged 6.7%.

Analyst: Indiscriminate Selling

Investor and analyst Navellier noted that the market is selling indiscriminately. Nvidia’s CEO commented that AI lacks sufficient capital to support the growth of so-called “Neoclouds” — a remark that added to concerns about the financing backdrop for AI infrastructure.

The turmoil in AI shares has prompted US investors to seek refuge in the bond market, driving Treasury yields sharply lower as money flows into safer assets.

Implications for Crypto and Risk Assets

While the story is rooted in traditional equities, its implications extend to crypto markets. AI-themed tokens and decentralized compute networks have been among the strongest performers this year, riding the same enthusiasm for AI infrastructure. A sustained repricing of AI spending could weigh on those narratives.

Moreover, the flight to bonds and falling yields could eventually support risk assets if the move reflects easing inflation rather than growth fears. For now, however, the correlation between AI equities and AI-related crypto tokens suggests caution.

Forward Outlook

Investors will watch upcoming earnings and capex guidance from hyperscalers for signs of whether AI spending is moderating. If bond yields continue to fall on safe-haven demand, crypto markets may face a mixed backdrop: lower yields are supportive, but risk aversion is not.
