Salesforce Surges 13% After Hours: Goldman Sees AI Monetization Inflection Point

Salesforce surged 13% after Q2 FY27 earnings beat and Goldman's bullish note. With 5% of customers upgrading to premium AI tiers and ACV up 60-80%, Goldman sees an AI monetization inflection point, raising its price target to $271.

Salesforce Surges 13% After Hours: Goldman Sees AI Monetization Inflection Point

Salesforce shares jumped 13% in after-hours trading following a strong Q2 FY2027 earnings report and a bullish note from Goldman Sachs. The investment bank reiterated its Buy rating and raised its price target from $242 to $271, implying a 32% upside. The market’s enthusiasm centers on early signs that Salesforce’s AI strategy is translating into real revenue, with 5% of customers already upgrading to premium AI tiers.

Earnings Beat and Accelerating Core Business

Salesforce reported Q2 revenue of $11.345 billion, up 11% year-over-year, in line with expectations. However, profitability exceeded forecasts, with EBIT and free cash flow margins beating by 50 and 400 basis points, respectively. The company guided Q3 revenue growth of 11-12%, including a contribution of just over 4 percentage points from Informatica. Excluding that acquisition, organic growth accelerated by approximately 130 basis points. Goldman expects core business acceleration of about 200 basis points in the second half, consistent with management’s earlier guidance.

AI Monetization: A Key Inflection Point

The highlight of the report is the AI monetization data. Goldman noted that 5% of Salesforce’s customer base has upgraded to premium AI tiers, with average contract value (ACV) increasing by 60-80% compared to prior levels. This far exceeds Goldman’s January assumption of a 20% ACV uplift from Agentforce. The reasons for upgrades are shifting: customers are no longer upgrading solely for Slack or cloud products, but to build custom AI agent front-end stacks on Salesforce’s platform. Goldman views this as an early inflection point, with potential for further upside if upgrade velocity or pricing models accelerate.

Two Paths to Value Capture

Goldman outlines two primary paths for Salesforce’s AI strategy. First, a partner path via ‘headless’ architecture partnerships, which decouple front-end applications from back-end data, making Salesforce data more accessible to a broader range of AI applications. Second, a direct upgrade path, where customers pay more for advanced AI features. The 5% upgrade rate is seen as just the beginning.

Valuation and Risks

Goldman raised its 12-month price target to $271 based on a 24x P/E multiple (down from 26x due to lower comps) applied to FY2027 GAAP EPS of $16.83. The bank adjusted revenue forecasts for FY2027-2029 to $46.254B, $50.784B, and $55.201B, respectively. Key risks include increased competition, slower Agentforce adoption, M&A disruptions, and higher investment pressure on margins.

Forward-Looking Perspective

The market’s positive reaction suggests investors see a clearer AI monetization path for Salesforce. The 5% upgrade rate is a starting point, not the ceiling. As AI agents become more integrated into enterprise workflows, Salesforce’s data moat and distribution could drive sustained growth. However, the company must balance investment in AI with margin discipline to maintain investor confidence.
