ARK Invest’s Bold AI Pivot: Buying Broadcom and Cloudflare, Dumping AMD and Roblox

ARK Invest rebalanced its ETFs on Aug 19, buying Broadcom, Cloudflare, and Cerebras while selling AMD, Roblox, and genomics names. The shift underscores a focus on AI infrastructure and edge cloud, with a cautious stance on gaming and biotech. ARK's purchase of Securitize also signals early interest in tokenized real-world assets.

ARK Invest’s Bold AI Pivot: Buying Broadcom and Cloudflare, Dumping AMD and Roblox

On August 19, ARK Invest executed a significant portfolio rebalancing across its suite of ETFs, signaling a clear strategic shift toward AI infrastructure and cloud computing while trimming exposure to genomics and gaming. The trades, disclosed in ARK’s official transaction notifications, highlight the firm’s conviction in the AI compute value chain—but also raise questions about its stance on semiconductor competition.

Key Transactions

  • Buys: ARKK, ARKW, and ARKQ all added Broadcom (AVGO), reflecting demand for custom AI accelerators and networking. ARKK and ARKW also purchased Cerebras Systems (CBRS) and Cloudflare (NET), while ARKF added Cloudflare and tokenization platform Securitize (SECZ). ARKG bought Ionis Pharmaceuticals (IONS) and Perceptive Capital Solutions (FRNM).
  • Sells: AMD (AMD) was sold across ARKW, ARKF, and ARKQ. Roblox (RBLX) saw a massive reduction of 501,466 shares in ARKK (0.32% of the ETF). 10X Genomics (TXG) was trimmed by ARKK and ARKG (over 200,000 shares). Palantir (PLTR), Illumina (ILMN), and Twist Bioscience (TWST) also faced reductions.

Strategic Implications

ARK’s rotation is a bet on the picks-and-shovels of AI: Broadcom’s custom ASICs and networking silicon are critical for hyperscale data centers, while Cloudflare’s edge cloud and security services benefit from AI-driven traffic growth. Cerebras, a challenger in AI training hardware, adds a high-risk/high-reward growth angle.

The AMD sale is notable—despite its strong MI300X GPU momentum, ARK appears to prefer companies with more direct exposure to AI infrastructure spending, possibly viewing AMD as facing tougher competition from NVIDIA and custom silicon. Similarly, Roblox’s cut suggests waning confidence in metaverse/gaming monetization, a theme ARK once championed.

Genomics and biotech continue to see selective trimming, though ARKG’s purchase of Ionis indicates a targeted approach rather than a wholesale exit.

Forward-Looking Perspective

ARK’s moves reinforce the narrative that AI compute and edge infrastructure remain the dominant growth themes. However, the divergence from AMD could signal a belief that semiconductor competition will intensify, benefiting broader ecosystem players. Investors should watch ARK’s subsequent filings for further conviction signals, particularly around Cerebras and Securitize—the latter hinting at ARK’s interest in tokenized real-world assets, a nascent but rapidly evolving sector.
