Coinbase Seeks CFTC Approval for 24/5 US Single-Stock Perpetual Futures

Coinbase Derivatives has filed with the CFTC to list US single-stock perpetual futures that would trade 24/5 with hourly funding and clear through Nodal Clear. The filing is pending, and approval would mark a major convergence of crypto-style derivatives with regulated US equity markets.

Coinbase Pushes Deeper Into TradFi Turf With US Single-Stock Perps

Coinbase Derivatives has filed with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to list single-stock perpetual futures in the United States, a product that would trade 24 hours a day, five days a week, use hourly funding rates, and clear through Nodal Clear. The filing remains pending, meaning no launch date is guaranteed and the contracts cannot go live until the regulator signs off.

The move marks one of the most aggressive attempts yet by a crypto-native venue to bring a core crypto instrument — the perpetual swap — into the regulated US equities derivatives market. Perpetual futures, which have no expiry date and instead rely on periodic funding payments to tether price to spot, are the dominant trading vehicle on offshore crypto exchanges. Porting that structure onto US single stocks would blur the line between crypto derivatives and traditional equity derivatives.

Why It Matters

  • 24/5 trading: US equities currently trade roughly 6.5 hours a day on weekdays. A 24/5 perpetual would let traders express views on names like Apple or Tesla through overnight and pre-market gaps that cash equities cannot capture.
  • Funding rates in equities: Hourly funding is standard in crypto but nearly unheard of in US listed equity derivatives, raising novel questions about manipulation, settlement and investor protection.
  • Clearing via Nodal Clear: Using an established clearinghouse signals Coinbase wants a compliant, centrally cleared product rather than an offshore-style offering.

The CFTC has been cautious about novel derivatives tied to individual securities, especially where the underlying cash market has fixed hours and circuit breakers. Regulators may worry that a 24/5 perpetual could become a venue for price discovery that bypasses the protections of the equity market — or that funding-rate mechanics could be gamed in thin overnight liquidity.

Competitive and Structural Implications

If approved, the contracts would put Coinbase Derivatives in direct competition with established futures exchanges and could pressure them to extend trading hours. It would also strengthen Coinbase’s narrative as a bridge between crypto and traditional finance, a positioning that has driven much of its institutional strategy. For crypto traders, it could offer a familiar instrument on unfamiliar assets; for equity traders, it introduces crypto-style leverage and funding to stocks.

What to Watch

The key questions are whether the CFTC grants approval, what position limits and margin requirements apply, and whether other exchanges follow with similar filings. A green light would be a landmark for US derivatives market structure; a rejection or long delay would reinforce the view that crypto-style products still face a high regulatory bar even when wrapped in a familiar clearing and compliance framework.
