Grayscale: Crypto Valuation Should Go Beyond Narrative, HYPE and CAKE Among Top Yield Generators

Grayscale Research Head Zach Pandl advocates for fundamental valuation of crypto assets beyond narrative, citing cash flow and yield metrics. Tokens like HYPE and CAKE rank among top yield generators, signaling a shift toward revenue-based analysis. The approach could mature the market but faces challenges in measurement and regulation.

Grayscale Research Head Calls for Fundamental Valuation of Crypto Assets

Zach Pandl, Head of Research at Grayscale, argues that crypto asset valuation should not rely solely on narrative. While Bitcoin, as a digital commodity and decentralized alternative to fiat currency, should be valued as “digital gold,” many other crypto assets can be assessed through cash flow fundamentals. Pandl points out that on-chain applications generate fee revenue through transactions, lending, and other activities. After deducting supply-side costs, protocol earnings can be used to evaluate economic value. Token buybacks, burns, and staking distributions also affect value transmission to holders, though new issuance and token unlocks may cause dilution.

Fundamental Metrics Gain Traction

Pandl’s comments come as the crypto industry increasingly seeks to move beyond speculative narratives. He notes that tokens such as HYPE and CAKE have recently ranked among the top ten by yield metrics, highlighting how some protocols are generating real revenue. This shift toward fundamental analysis mirrors traditional finance, where cash flow and earnings drive valuations. For crypto, the challenge lies in accurately measuring protocol revenue and accounting for tokenomics. Supply-side costs, including staking rewards and liquidity mining incentives, can significantly impact net earnings. Moreover, token buybacks and burns can enhance value for holders, while dilution from new issuance remains a risk.

Implications for Investors and Protocols

The growing emphasis on cash flow valuation could lead to a more mature market. Investors may increasingly allocate capital to protocols with sustainable revenue models rather than those with hype alone. This could pressure projects to optimize tokenomics and demonstrate real usage. However, the approach is not without challenges. Many DeFi protocols have complex revenue structures, and cross-chain activity can obscure true earnings. Regulatory uncertainty also complicates the treatment of token buybacks and staking rewards. Despite these hurdles, the trend toward fundamental analysis is likely to continue as the market matures.

Forward-Looking Perspective

As the crypto market evolves, the divide between narrative-driven and fundamentals-driven assets may widen. Bitcoin’s role as digital gold remains unique, but for altcoins, cash flow could become the primary valuation metric. Projects that can consistently generate revenue and return value to holders are likely to outperform. The emergence of yield metrics as a ranking tool, as seen with HYPE and CAKE, signals a shift toward more rational investing. In the long run, this could attract institutional capital seeking yield and stability. However, investors must remain vigilant about tokenomics risks and regulatory developments that could alter the landscape.
