China Stocks Slip as Property Rally Fades, PCB and Glass Substrate Shine

China's major stock indices fell Tuesday morning, with the Beijing 50 index up over 2% as property stocks reversed gains. PCB, glass substrate, and CRO names rallied on pricing hikes and policy support, while Hong Kong tech and commodity futures weakened.

Market Snapshot: A-Shares Retreat, Beijing 50 Buck the Trend

China’s major equity benchmarks closed the morning session lower on Tuesday, with the Shanghai Composite down 0.36%, the Shenzhen Component off 0.58%, and the ChiNext Index 0.43% weaker. The Beijing Stock Exchange 50 index defied the broader pullback, climbing more than 2%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 0.76%, while the Hang Seng Tech Index dropped 0.97%, dragged by a 4% intraday slump in Alibaba and a 2% decline in Tencent. More than 3,500 stocks across the Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing exchanges traded in the red, with combined morning turnover of 1.17 trillion yuan, roughly 270 billion yuan less than the prior session.

Sector Rotation: Property Fades, Materials and Healthcare Lead

The real estate sector staged a morning rally before paring gains. Vanke briefly hit the 10% daily limit before closing the half-day up 5%, while several smaller developers held three-day winning streaks. The intraday reversal followed a high-profile expert call suggesting China’s housing supply-demand balance may not tighten until 2027 and that a true price bottom could form around 2030, tempering optimism over recent policy signals, including new national housing standards and a spike in Shanghai second-hand home transactions.

Copper-clad laminate (CCL) and printed circuit board (PCB) makers were the morning’s strongest theme, powered by a fresh 10% price hike from a Jiangxi-based CCL producer, following earlier increases in electronic fabric prices. Glass substrate names rallied after BOE Chairman Chen Yanshun outlined plans to invest over 80 billion yuan in R&D and 800 billion yuan in procurement over five years, with two mass-production lines for glass-based perovskite devices and packaging substrates to be finalized within a year. CRO stocks advanced on a new ten-ministry pharmaceutical industry plan targeting 20% annual growth for innovative drugs and explicitly backing AI-driven drug discovery and brain-computer interfaces.

Cross-Asset Check: Bonds, Commodities, and Hong Kong Tech

Government bond futures fell across the curve, with the 30-year contract down 0.04% and shorter tenors posting smaller declines, suggesting some rotation out of fixed income. Commodity futures were mostly lower: crude oil tumbled 4.00%, ethylene glycol lost 3.79%, and palm oil shed 1.79%, while platinum gained 0.98% and industrial silicon added 0.88%. Hong Kong-listed tech names bore the brunt of selling, with AI model developers Zhipu and MINIMAX each falling more than 4%.

Investor Takeaways

  • Policy tailwinds are selective. The CRO and innovative drug complex benefits from explicit government growth targets, while property remains hostage to supply-demand math that points to a multi-year bottoming process.
  • Materials pricing power is real. Successive CCL and electronic fabric price hikes signal genuine tightness in the AI-server supply chain, making PCB and glass substrate names a structural rather than tactical trade.
  • Hong Kong tech is the pressure valve. Heavyweight internet and AI names are absorbing profit-taking as investors rotate into A-share industrials and healthcare.
  • Watch the commodity divergence. Crude’s 4% slide and broad softness in chemicals contrast with firm precious and new-energy metals, a signal that growth expectations remain uneven.
